"There's a reason a handful of communities in the world stand out for architectural innovation. Sarasota's one of them. You really do have to see it to believe it."
Expect SarasotaMOD Weekend 2020 to continue without a hitch this November 6-8, despite many other event cancellations in the community this fall. The annual three-day festival, presented by Sarasota Architectural Foundation (SAF), is known for welcoming visitors to immerse themselves in the architecture of the Sarasota School movement. And with Covid-19 in mind, SAF has redesigned MOD Weekend to amply meet CDC guidelines while continuing to offer its novel touring and visitation experiences. Safety precautions will include timed entries, smaller groups, outdoor/open-air settings, mandatory face coverings and limited ticket availability.
This year, internationally-renowned modern architect Carl Abbott, FAIA, is set to be MOD's honoree. “Carl Abbott has been an icon in Sarasota and the worldwide architectural community for more than 50 years,” says SAF Board Chair Anne Essner. “We are thrilled to partner with him in this year’s programming and look forward to welcoming visitors to our latest MOD Weekend.”
The festival kicks off with a virtual presentation: In/Formed by the Land: Carl Abbott’s Architecture for Nature, on Friday, November 6. Abbott will speak candidly about his career, influences and projects in a recorded conversation with Anne-Marie Russell, Executive Director of the Sarasota Art Museum. Russell is also the curator of the Museum’s newest exhibition for SarasotaMOD: “Carl Abbott: Architect for Nature,” dedicated to his vernacular art and mid-century modern style. Saturday night’s “MidMOD Weekend Party” at the Sarasota Art Museum will give guests a first glimpse of the exhibition, and on Sunday, November, 8, the Museum will offer exclusive access to the exhibition to MOD ticket holders on a timed entry basis. Meanwhile, an additional exhibit will feature Abbott’s iconic blue sculpture, on display at Art Center Sarasota, and with timed entry in small groups. SAF shared that Abbott will available to meet visitors and offer brief remarks later in the afternoon on Saturday.
In addition, Abbott has personally curated self-guided driving tour itineraries for the weekend, aptly named “Carl by Car,” North and South—allowing two separate onsite visits to residential and commercial projects that you’d be unable to access on your own. Admission includes a map, descriptive booklet, and a new digital access feature that can be viewed on smartphones or tablets—premiering 10 short videos capturing Abbott as he explains his creative process for the chosen projects. In addition, MOD’s newest guided tour, “Carl & Co. by Kayak” will provide a backside waterside vantage point by kayaking to some of his projects, along with other houses by Sarasota School and modern architects located on the water. These tours will run on Saturday and Sunday from Siesta Key.
“Sarasota in the 1950s was one of the most important places in the world for architectural creativity, where the greatest design movement of the day came together,” says Abbott. “There’s a reason a handful of communities in the world stand out for architectural innovation. Sarasota’s one of them. You really do have to see it to believe it.”

In October 2019, Westcoast Black Theatre Troupe and Key Chorale came together for an exuberant collaboration with “American Roots: The Gospel Experience.” The arts organizations explored the rich tradition of Black gospel music in America through three sold-out performances at churches in Sarasota and Venice. The October 19th performance at St. Boniface Episcopal Church on Siesta Key was filmed and will now be presented virtually on WBTT’s website through November 1. "It was truly a thrill to be able to put a program of this magnitude together, in partnership with the skilled singers of the Key Chorale, and perform it in area churches," said WBTT Founder and Artistic Director Nate Jacobs. "Gospel music was born in churches, where African Americans could find release from the pressures of everyday life. This music played a huge role in the cultural experience of the African American community but I think all viewers will find the themes to be relatable and inspirational." Tickets to watch the two-hour streaming video are $25 per household; patrons will receive a 24-hour viewing pass that can be activated any time during the streaming run.

The Sarasota/Manatee MPO unveiled the “Transform 2045” Long Range Transportation Plan (LRTP) at the MPO September board meeting. Transform 2045 is the culmination of more than 20 months of collaboration and community involvement that relied on technical analysis, community visioning, and public engagement resulting in a list of transportation projects anticipated to be funded through 2045. “We began our effort in January 2019, gathering information from the community, to create a vision for the future. The plan we are presenting today truly addresses the ideas and needs we heard from our constituents and will transform our region over the next 25 years.” Says MPO Chair, Mayor Shirley Groover Bryant. The long range plan identifies over 100 priority transportation projects, the timeframe for completing those projects, and guides the investment of local, state and federal funds throughout the Sarasota/Manatee region. Silverman Professor of Law and professor of philosophy at the University of Pennsylvania. Allen is a global thought leader in the fields of privacy law, data protection and ethics. No name has dominated Sarasota’s history like that of John Ringling, commonly known today as the “circus king who built a museum and started an art school.” A century ago, Ringling and his wife, Mable, spent a dozen quiet winters in Sarasota before the dramatic Florida Land Boom began in the 1920s. Always one to recognize opportunity, Ringling, often working with developer Owen Burns, seized the chance to profit from his significant land holdings in Sarasota and on its barrier islands. While developers George Merrick, Addison Mizner, Glenn Curtiss and Carl Fisher fought over the Miami-Palm Beach corridor, Ringling had freshly minted Sarasota County largely all to himself. This program traces the riches-to-ruin story of both the Florida Boom and John Ringling. He had many acquaintances but few friends, yet he reshaped Sarasota’s image and helped make it the cultural capital it is today. In this lecture, you will learn details of Ringling’s life that go far beyond the common perception. Tickets: $15. Members: $10. Registration Closes On: Tuesday, September 29, 2020 @ 12:00 AM

After 47 years of teaching, Susan MacManus retired as Distinguished Professor Emerita of the department of Government and International Affairs at the University of South Florida-Tampa. She is author and co-author of over a dozen books and a sought-after nationally-known political analyst and noted commentator on state and national television news.
In the past, seniors have been America’s most dependable voters and were coveted by political can-didates because they historically voted at the greatest rate in elections. Nevertheless, the country has been undergoing an upheaval that has hard-ened political views and is causing the electorate to make decisions based more on personality than on political competence. Will the 2020 election bring unprecedented younger voters to the polls based on political issues, a trust of the principles of democracy, and a desire to see America regain its prominence in the world?
Called the “most-quoted political analyst in Florida,” Susan MacManus returns to Einstein’s Circle to share her experienced insight with us. She will talk about voting history, changing de-mographics in Florida, and what the numbers are telling us about the outcome of this very conten-tious race.
